Summary:

How to update a failover setup (with a master node and failover node) to the Hearst Castle Release.

Problem:

Installing the Hearst Castle Release on the master failover unit will not work with Auto failback enabled.

Solution:

1. From the master administration user interface (on either port 81 or 441), disable Auto failback:
Go to System > Hardware > Failover
Ensure Save is clicked
2. From the failover unit's administration user interface (on port 440), disable Auto failback:
Go to System > Hardware > Failover.
Ensure Save is clicked.
3. Still from the failover unit's administration user interface, install Hearst:
Go to System > Maintenance > Updates & releases

Note: This process can take approximately 30 minutes to complete as the failover unit reboots up to 4 times.

4. From the master administration user interface (on either port 81 or 441), Enter standby mode:
Go to System > Hardware > Failover
Wait 30 seconds for this to process

We will now refer to the master unit as the "passive master unit" and the failover unit as the "active failover unit".

5. Confirm the failover unit is now active:
Test all services
Ensure user browsing has not been interrupted
6. From the passive master unit's administration user interface (on port 440), install Hearst:
Go to System > Maintenance > Updates & releases

Note: This process can take approximately 30 minutes to complete as the passive master unit reboots up to 4 times.

7. From the active failover unit's administration user interface (on either port 81 or 441), Enter standby mode:
Go to System > Hardware > Failover
Wait 30 seconds for this to process

We will now refer to the active failover unit as the "failover unit" and the passive master unit as the "master unit".

8. If required, re-enable Auto failback on the master unit:
Go to System > Hardware > Failover
Ensure Save is clicked
9. Re-enable Auto failback for the failover unit:
Go to System > Hardware > Failover
Ensure Save is clicked
10. Reboot the failover unit.

Tip: Although this article is aimed at those updating to the Hearst Castle Release, it is good practice to follow these instructions when updating your failover nodes to any Smoothwall release. Only the number of reboots in steps 3 and 6, and the timings, are Hearst-specific.
