Summary

An insight into the reasons Guardian may block a page it considers unsafe.

Problem

Why does Guardian block a perfectly clean web page?

Solution

In order to correct over-blocking in Guardian the first step is to investigate the block reason. This block reason will be shown on the block page , or can be found in the web filter logs under Reports > Logs > Web filter.

Once the block reason is known the configuration can be checked to see if any changes are needed.

There are 5 reasons for a page to be blocked:

Domain/URL filtering

This reason shows that the domain is in the blocklist. Please let Smoothwall know if you believe we have categorized the page incorrectly.

Adding the domain / URL to an allow rule will bypass the block.

Content filtering

Guardian has categorized the page based on the content of the site. If you feel this is wrong, please let Smoothwall know.

Adding the domain / URL to an allow rule will bypass the block.

Search Term filtering

A user has searched for a phrase that is specifically listed in our search term blocklist.

If this search should be allowed, it is possible to override the block by adding the search term to a custom category in the Advanced section and using this category in an allow rule.

URL Patterns

This reason shows that a pattern in the URL has triggered the block. If you feel this is wrong, please let Smoothwall know.

Adding the domain / URL to an allow rule will bypass the block.

Flash filtering

This reason is shown when a Shockwave Flash element has been recognized as a game or an advert.

Allowing the URL will bypass the block.
