Summary

You need a category that covers all Google sites.

Problem

You would like to use Google sites in rules such as block, but not include categories such as Web Search.

Solution

1. Browse to Guardian > Policy objects > Categories.
2. From the Manage categories section, configure a meaningful Name, for example, Google Sites.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Scroll down to URL patterns.
5. Add the following:

^https?://(?:[^/]*\.)?google\.\w{1,3}(?:\.\w{1,3})?

6. Click Save.

This category can now be used in policies, such as to exclude Google from your HTTPS inspection rules. For more information about creating filtering rules, see https://help.smoothwall.net/Latest/Content/modules/guardian3/cgi-bin/guardian/filteringpolicywiz.htm.
