This article aims to help diagnose basic authentication issues where users are unexpectedly prompted for credentials in the browsers.
This issue can occur if the Smoothwall is unable to fetch the user credentials from the client automatically. Users could be faced with a pop-up window requesting credentials, and even entering the correct credentials will not allow them to bypass this window.
This symptom usually indicates an issue with the authentication service on the Smoothwall — it is either not running, or has communication or validation issues. To find out the exact cause of the issue and how to resolve it, from the Smoothwall administration user interface, go to Services > Authentication > Directories. Click Diagnose for the relevant directory connection.
This indicates where a fault has been found and what the cause of the problem is.
