Summary

Fix for Microsoft Windows Media Player asking for authentication

Problem

When accessing external links using Windows Media Player on Windows 7, the Media Player asks for user authentication on NTLM-enabled proxies, such as Guardian.

Solution

This prompt appears because Windows Media Player struggles to determine if the proxy is a local address or not.

Microsoft has issued a fix to address this. To download the fix, and a detailed description of how to install it, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816089.
